ArtChix of the Month - Patricia (Patty) Potter

It is my pleasure to again choose an ArtChix of the Month from our group of illustrious artists. This month, it is to be Patricia (we call her Patty!) Potter. She graces our art shows with her sometimes whimsical, sometimes abstract, sometimes thoughtful, sometimes warm and fuzzy "old-school" but, always, good art pieces.

Patricia was born in Kansas, graduated from High School from Aberdeen, Mississippi. She received a Bachelor’s of Arts degree from Denver University and a Master’s Degree in Communication from Denver University in Denver, Colorado.

Patricia is a retired Secondary School and College educator from Colorado. After retirement, Patricia explored a deferred passion for art. She challenged this passion with taking beginning art classes and continued with great persistence with advanced workshops with Judy Patti (Littleton, Colorado), Frank Francese (Grand Junction, Colorado), Raleigh Kinney (Colorado) and Tom Lynch workshop (Santa Fe, New Mexico) as well as other continued art experiences.

From an all-community art show in Sun City, Arizona Patricia won two first place ribbons and one second place ribbon. At the Art Alliance Fine Art Festival in Wickenburg, Arizona Patricia won a first place ribbon in watercolor and first place in encaustic (hot wax and pigment). She is a juried member of the Arizona Art Alliance and a juried member of the Vanguard Artists, a member of the Sun City Grand Art Club and a member of the Wickenburg Art Cub.

Patricia describes her art pursuits as “somehow my paint brush connects with a creative force waiting in my mind, and together this hand/brain synergy gives me pure joy and, sometimes, good art”.

As your blog administrator, I have again had the pleasure of selecting an "ArtChix of the Month", Carol Kennedy. Carol, together with Ruth Malins, devised the concept of holding art shows in the art studios at Sun City Grand during busy weekends in the community. They, together with a few of us hearty and intrepid artists (all female) became known far and wide as the "ArtChix". Carol and Ruth have worked long and hard to make this a successful group and we so appreciate their efforts as we begin another season of ArtChix shows.

Carol Reed Kennedy

Carol Reed Kennedy, a resident of Sun City Grand, is a watercolor, experimental watermedia and collage artist who specializes in southwestern-style artwork.

Her watercolor artwork is based on pottery designs created in New Mexico and Arizona in the 1700s and 1800s.

Carol is a past president of the Sun City Grand Art Club, a member of the ArtChix group and Vanguard Artists. She founded the St. Louis Collage Art Group.

A former R.N. with a Master’s degree in Business, Carol has also taken many specialized courses in watercolor, experimental watermedia and collage techniques in the United States and Canada. She has taught collage in St. Louis, Missouri and at the SCG Art Club.

Ruth Malins - Featured Artist of the Month

As Blog Administrator, I am priviliged to select a Featured Artist from the ArtChix group. It is with pleasure that I choose Ruth Malins for this month's recognition. She is a Co-Founder of the ArtChix movement and a hard worker for our cause. Please read her story here:

I moved to Sun City Grand in January of 2005 and the first thing I did was join the Sun City Grand Art Club. I have served as the Club’s president for 3 years.

As a mainly representational painter, I try to depict in my work the people, places and things that give us all a sense of belonging, and feelings of peace, joy and hope. “What flows from the brush onto the canvas” is what I go with. For me, the process of creating something is equally as important as the end result. Making art is very therapeutic and I feel greatly blessed to have such an outlet. When I paint, it is as if I’ve entered into a meditative state”.

Some people say that each piece of art created is a self-portrait of the artist at the moment it is created. “My goal in painting is to “reconnect with my emotions” and have a body of work that I am proud of, and that people will enjoy. I believe I have accomplished that goal and am proud and honored to be a member of the SCG Art Club.”I am a member of the Vanguard Artist’s group and winner of a Blue Ribbon from the 2007 Peoria “Celebration of the Artists” Show.
